Cisco ASA 5500 Series adaptive security appliances (including the Cisco ASA 5505) are purpose-built solutions that combine best-of-breed security and VPN services with the innovative Cisco Adaptive Identification and Mitigation (AIM) architecture.
They were introduced in 2005 and replaced three seperate lines of Cisco products: Cisco PIX (firewall and NAT functions), Cisco IPS 4200 Series (intrusion prevention systems, IPS) and Cisco VPN 3000 Series (virtual private networking, VPN).
They were designed as a core component of the Cisco Self-Defending Network, the Cisco ASA 5500 Series provide proactive threat defense that stops attacks before they spread through the network
